Jackie Joyne-Kersee, the retired champion American heptathlete once said,
“Age is no barrier. It’s a limitation you put on your mind.”
It sounds like a cliche. But my mum proves that it doesn’t have to be. She turned 60 this year and is one of the most active and adventurous people I know. She hikes, goes proper 4WDing, sleeps under canvas, cycled 100 miler with me last year, went white water rafting for her 60th birthday and is again joining my sister on the Adrenathon adventure race later this month.
And, as of this morning, Mum is also a mountain biker. After a little persuasion from my sister (and Whoops Witch Way team mate), Mum joined us for our training ride this morning.
Mum rode my brother-in-law’s mountain bike (which is also one of my old bikes) and seemed to thoroughly enjoy the spin along sandy fire trails, across dry rocky creek beds and through twisting single track. We gave Mum a few little tips and before long she was hopping over logs and zipping through corners like she’s been out here for years.
She’s also a cheeky videographer, taking this video footage of my sister and I completing the “Do 10 cartwheels” Tribesports challenge. Bet you can’t watch the following clip without wanting to get up and do some cartwheels yourself.
Total: 11.3km MTB + 10 cartwheels
